Applewood Awards $1,000 to Armchair Samaritan
Armchair Samaritan is a non-profit organization based in Denver that provides individuals in need with household appliances, furniture and other large items. Large household items can be extremely tricky to move, not to mention costly, but thanks to Armchair Samaritan, families in need are now able to have assistance. The organization will pick up unwanted items from your home at no charge and then will deliver the used items to families who otherwise would not be able to afford a couch, stove, washer/dryer, etc.
Douglas Evans, Founder of Armchair Samaritan began the organization after moving to a new home and finding himself wanting to get rid of some older household appliances and large pieces of furniture. Evans posted his unwanted items at extremely low cost online and offered free delivery. The people he met through delivering the items really opened his eyes to the need in our community. He delivered bunk beds to a family who had recently experienced a house fire and were sleeping on the floor of their apartment; and he delivered his older stove to an elderly woman who had been without for months due to financial limitations. From there, Armchair Samaritan was created. “Well it has snowballed into more than I could have ever imagined and has become one of the greatest things I have done in the service of others and has really opened my heart to the need some people have for help in this area,” said Evans.
Armchair Samaritan has had such great success in their efforts throughout Denver that they are hoping to find supporters to assist them in opening a warehouse where they can store donations before they are delivered to their new homes. They are also looking for individuals to assist with moving. “We are so thrilled to support Armchair Samaritan, they are providing an important service to our community and we hope our donation will help them expand their organization,” said John Ward, Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric president.
