Applewood’s Tips for Keeping your Home’s Plumbing System Clear During 4th of July Fun

Don’t let your plumbing system cancel your 4th of July celebrations. The 4th of July is a time for celebrating the independence of the United States of America. Spending your day tending to a plumbing issue with a plumber is not how you should celebrate.

Keeping your home’s plumbing clear before and after your holiday gatherings is something that can easily be done yourself. Drains, toilets and disposals can quickly become clogged by allowing large, hard or solidifying objects down into your drain. The process of clogging or blockage can be fast or slow, but when it happens, it can be detrimental to your home and plumbing system.

Follow Applewood Heating Plumbing & Electric’s tips to ensure your plumbing system is clean and ready for any party, event and daily use:

  • Know what to flush. It is best to only flush toilet paper and your business down the toilet. Keep trash cans nearby for disposal of any other products, such as tissues, feminine products, trash and paper towels.
  • Scrap, dump and leverage your trash cans. It is common for homeowners to keep trash cans under their sink, how convenient! So instead of directly placing your dish into the dishwasher or rinsing your scraps into the sink, scrap you scraps into the trash then rinse and put in the dishwasher. Preventing food scraps from going down the drain will help your garbage disposal to remain odorless and unclogged. Do not allow any hard items, fats and grease down your disposals or drains, this can cause immediate cloggage or pipe bursts.
  • Put up signs. When having larger than normal groups of people over there’s added stress on your plumbing systems. It’s easy to forget to tell everyone your plumbing rules and quirks. Have a sign in areas like your bathroom and kitchen to reduce any unexpected emergencies.
  • Check your pipes, plumbing, drains and systems before they are used by nonfrequent users. Everyone does things differently; your pipes might not allow what your neighbors pipes allow. Ensuring all systems are running smoothly and regular will prevent any emergency plumbing accidents.
  • Keep your plumbing up to date! Make sure all units, appliances, pipes, heaters and drains are up to date and working correctly. Get things checked when you have concerns. Even if you can’t see the issue, it’s best to get it looked at to stop further and potential damage.
  • Insure you have a trusted plumber you can call whenever you have questions, concerns or issues. Leave the unclogging to the professionals to prevent further issues.

Don’t let your plumbing cancel your party! It’s easy to let your plumbing get aside during busy times. Implementing these simple things into your daily life, not just around the holidays, will save you and your plumbing a lot of damage.
