What is a GFCI Outlet?
“GFCI” stands for ground fault circuit interrupter outlet. These grounded, three-prong electrical outlets are easily identified by their“reset” and “test” buttons on the cover plate. You likely have a few GFCI receptacles installed in your home’s bathroom or kitchen but perhaps didn’t realize how they worked.
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet functions like a standard outlet but is designed to protect you from electrical shock caused by ground faults. It works by monitoring the flow of electricity through the circuit. A GFCI detects imbalances between the hot and neutral wires that result when electricity takes an unintended path, such as through water or a person. If an imbalance as small as 4-6 milliamps occurs, the GFCI trips the circuit within milliseconds and cuts off power.
